dog eating kibble. There are many elements that, when aligned, create the best chance for a pet’s long term health and vitality. Of these, pet nutrition ranks toward the top. Because of their intense motivation for food (and anything food-related), it’s important to provide food that helps them thrive. All this makes sense to most pet owners, but the sheer volume of pet food choices can be daunting. We’ve got you covered with our guide to optimal pet nutrition. Let’s dig in!

The Basics

Cats need meat to survive. As obligate carnivores, they must eat meat to receive crucial protein and amino acids. A lower carbohydrate count is considered healthier for cats, while some dogs can get all of the vital components of a canine diet through a grain-focused vegetarian or protein-light diet.

Kibble and canned food have different nutritional components. Canned food has a high moisture content that is ideal for pets with kidney or urinary tract conditions. Kibble is carbohydrate-heavy and can be light on protein.

In addition to the right balance of protein, carbohydrates, and water, fat and amino acids are critical for optimal nutrition. Proteins and fats are a source of amino acids that aid the body’s tissues, hormones, and antibodies. These nutrients add to a pet’s vitality by reducing inflammation and promoting vitamin absorption.

The Pet Food Labels

Pet food bags or containers may not necessarily be designed to deceive, but manufacturers try everything to get the attention of well-meaning pet owners. Despite how a product is marketed, we encourage pet owners to take extra care in reading the ingredient label and the nutritional analysis.

Things to look out for include:

  • Protein values and sources
  • Fat
  • Fiber
  • Moisture content
  • Calories
  • Suggested serving size
  • Byproducts

While the Association of American Feed Control Officials doesn’t regulate or endorse pet foods, this organization does provide insight into choosing safe pet foods. An important aspect worth considering is the quality of the ingredients.

When researching brands take a look at their staff. A trained nutritionist can shed light on the chosen ingredients, the manufacturing site, and quality control. Check for information regarding certification of their procedures for more confidence that the product is safe for your pet.

Optimal Pet Nutrition

When narrowing down your pet food choices, it’s necessary to consider the pet’s species, age, lifestyle, and medical history. Likewise, specially-formulated diets can support the nutritional needs of an overweight or obese pet. Because they may be at higher risk of developing arthritis, cancer, and diabetes, providing the right food for overweight pets is of critical importance.

A Balanced Diet

Treats are an important part of any pet’s day, but they do add calories to a balanced diet. If an owner relies on treats for training or obedience lessons, it’s a good idea to reduce their food portions. Be sure that treats do not exceed 10% of a pet’s daily caloric intake.
